An Idea For A Postpartum Journal

I just finished reading the book “You First” by Lea Michele. As a mother I know it can be difficult to find the time to sit down and journal. I was looking for a way to do this. This book looked interesting to me and I thought it could possibly help mothers like me, particularly ones that may be prone to postpartum depression.

Now, I am a person that loves books; the way they feel, look, their size are all important to me. You could say I’m a little bit of a collector of books of all kinds. This book is beautiful and has a smooth and pleasing feel to it. I do wish the title wasn’t on the cover though as this takes away from its purpose of being a type of journal, especially if you’re a private person and don’t wish to advertise what the book is.

The book made me feel like it was part of a counseling session. For some this may seem appealing. However, I am not the ‘counseling’ type. I can see how someone who has a hard time expressing how they feel may benefit though. She asks very detailed questions and then gives you room to write your response and feelings. Some of the subjects she has you think about are your goals (short term and long term), your relationships, your health (diet and exercise), how you feel about yourself and your family history. I feel all of these topics are important to your overall emotional health, so I can see why someone could benefit from this.  I was hoping to find a book that would help mothers after birth emotionally not feel overwhelmed.  It is so easy to feel this way, with our emotions in such flux.  Just keeping a journal can help a mother cope with all the new emotions she’s experiencing.

On the other hand, I am not this type of person. You would need to look at yourself and see if you would truly use this. I will probably never write in this and am likely to give it to a friend or client who would. Knowing this I would hesitate to recommend this as I see it as a waste of money for myself.

Do you like to journal but sometimes don’t know what to write? If yes, then this is the book for you. Otherwise, save your money.I received this book from Blogging for Books for this review.
